Leave No Trace: The LCT

The Lost Coast Trail is a beautiful stretch of undeveloped coastline in Northern California. It is a place that all of us who reside here are proud to call home. However, during the peak season, the trail often witnesses a disregard for Leave No Trace principles, with many visitors practicing carelessness and neglect.

If you are visiting the Lost Coast please take the time to learn and prepare so that everyone can continue to enjoy this beautiful place..

The Seven Principles of Leave No Trace provide an easily understood framework of minimum impact practices for anyone visiting the outdoors. Although Leave No Trace has its roots in backcountry settings, the Principles have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere — from remote wilderness areas, to local parks and even in your own backyard. They also apply to almost every recreational activity. Each Principle covers a specific topic and provides detailed information for minimizing impacts.

Though the Seven Principles are well-established and widely recognized, they remain dynamic. The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics consistently reviews, assesses, and refines these principles. The Center’s Education Department conducts ongoing research, including the publication of scholarly articles in independent journals, ensuring that the principles stay abreast of the latest insights from biologists, land managers, and other leaders in outdoor education.
